Produced by Hallmark Card Company, Hallmark cards were a simple way to express sentiment about events or situations without actually talking to the person to whom you were giving the card.

Using empty and sappy lines that often rhymed, and the occasional cartoon, these cards were, for a time, the standard way to congratulate a person on their birthday. Ice cream has since ejected the Hallmark card from this throne.

A decline in the need for belated birthday cards forced the Hallmark company to seek out new business streams. These new business ventures - including a short lived sanitation company called "Hallmark Haul-Away Heroes", and a line of hearing aid socks - were not terribly successful. They continued to make greeting cards to this day, but have moved all these efforts online.
